What’s New from Shopify – Summer 2022 Edition

  • Multiple discount codes in a single transaction

  • Shopify POS Product Metafields

  • Tokengated commerce

  • Checkout extensibility (for Shopify Plus businesses only)

  • And many more

Multiple Discount Codes

Discount codes are a great way to capture sales from consumers looking for bargains. For years, Shopify users have been unable to “stack” coupons – to use multiple discount codes for the same shopping cart transaction. But not anymore.

Now, merchants on any Shopify plan have the option to offer stackable coupon codes. Want to run a free shipping promotion and a percentage discount at the same time? Offer a loyalty discount that can stack with a holiday promotion? Combine a BOGO offer with a shipping upgrade? Now you can. 

More than just an option to run several promotions at a time, this feature is a significant benefit for retailers with multiple brands. They can now easily meet the requirements of several iMAP (internet minimum advertised price) policies at the same time.

To go along with this new feature, the cart and checkout communication in Shopify’s graphics has been improved for clarity. It will now specify which items each discount code applies to when a buyer uses coupon codes in the checkout process.

Shopify POS Product Metafields

Many of today’s product offerings are more complex than ever. You can easily ensure your staff has all the needed information on each product without releasing sensitive information to the public. 

Product metafields are a great way to add proprietary information about each product to your Shopify site. They’re fully customizable and only visible to your staff. You can use them to keep track of restocking dates, warranty details, care instructions, and much more. You can even encode info about complementary products to make upselling a breeze.

Shopify Flow

If efficiency is your goal, automation is an excellent way to achieve it. Now stores with Shopify Plus, Advanced, or Shopify plans and those that use the Shopify Fulfillment Network can automate with Shopify Flow.

The Shopify Flow ecommerce automation solution is a great way to build workflows and automate all sorts of tasks and processes in your business. Use it to tag customers for segmentation or marketing campaigns. Automate post-purchase email campaigns. Stop high-risk orders before your brand becomes a victim of fraud. When you automate with Shopify Flow, you’ll free up staff time for more nuanced tasks that a computer can’t handle.

Tokengated Commerce

Some of today’s best brands offer more than just shopping. They also build a community around a shared interest or experience. Now you can unlock the power of such a community with tokengated commerce from Shopify. While this feature might not be for everyone, lifestyle brands who frequently sell out and rely on product drops for the vast majority of their revenue could greatly benefit!

NFTs are all the rage right now, but they’re more than just fun digital artwork you can own. When you connect crypto wallets to your Shopify experience, you can offer unique, personalized benefits to token holders. Give your most loyal customers access to special pre-sales and discounts. Restrict access to collaborations with other brands. You can place merchandise, events, details about pop-ups, and more behind a gate that can only be opened by those with your selected NFTs. The possibilities are endless!

Checkout Extensibility

Finally, when you want to customize your checkout process, you’re sure to love the new checkout extensibility options from Shopify. 

In the past, merchants had to start with our templates, then customize the checkout experience by editing the code directly. This means small businesses that don’t have the right technical expertise on the payroll were stuck with a generic checkout page. Not anymore.

Now, we’re offering Shopify partners the ability to deploy customizations through a custom app or public app on the Shopify App Store. This means new features for customizations, new functionality, and a new Checkout Branding API to let you create a checkout experience that fits your brand perfectly.

Additional New Features from Shopify

In addition to the five new features we highlighted in this article, Shopify released (or is soon releasing a treasure trove of functionality), including:

  • The recently launched Shopify Audiences allows merchants to map custom prospecting audiences to Facebook/Instagram based on their behavior across the Shopify ecosystem

  • The announcement of Shop Cash rewards which allows customers to earn 1% in Shop Cash on all eligible purchases completed with Shop Pay

  • A new Twitter Shopping integration allows merchants to easily sell their products directly on their Twitter profile

  • A new creator and influencer management platform called Dovetale

  • Overhauled B2B features and functionality
